For years and years we endured a cold kitchen in the winter months. Despite having a Myson Kickspace plinth heater breathing warmish air into the kitchen it was never powerful enough to overcome the fact that the kitchen is on the first floor over the garage, and having terracotta tiled floor.
So as with most tradespeople you never get around to carrying out work at home, always prioritising customers work. I finally got around to doing the work at home to sort out a cold kitchen this winter.
I decided put Smith’s to the test and install one of their Space Saver plinth heaters replacing the asthmatic incumbent Myson Kickspace. I decided on a relatively powerful one, on the basis you can always turn it down, or off, if the kitchen gets too hot.
I measured up the cut-out in the plinth and it was the right size for the new Space Saver – so that saved a little time.
After turning the heating off I isolated the valves on the Flow and Return by the existing plinth heater, let out a little water from the heating system to flush out any debris trapped in the pipes.
I pushed the new Space Saver through the cut-out and then connected the flexible pipes to the Space Saver. Wired up the new heater to the 3A-fused spur.
I opened up the isolating valves, checked my joint for any leaks and then bled the air from the system through the bleed valve accessible through front grille.
I turned the heating back on, and bingo! Immediately the temperature of the air being blown into the kitchen by the new Space Saver was much hotter than with the previous plinth heater.
The kitchen is now no longer cold and heats up really quickly. There are two speeds for the Space Saver so if you need to heat the kitchen really quickly you can. On the lower setting the fan is all but inaudible. The Space Saver only comes on when the temperature of the water in the heating system reaches 38°C so the fan doesn’t blow cold air around the kitchen when the heating is off. Genius! There is a cool air setting for the summer.
The new Space Saver complements the other brushed stainless steel appliances in the kitchen and is worth its weight in gold.
I really wish I’d changed the plinth heater earlier. Now what’s next on my list to sort out at home?
